With their unique and tunable properties, ionic liquids (ILs) have been used as solvents, catalysts, and antibacterials. Though IL research has significantly contributed to the scientific community, there is now on-going research in the synthesis of poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) using RAFT addition via photocatalysis and in studying the effects of different carbon chain lengths at the N position. Polymerizing ILs can alter their chemical properties as well as physical structure, and the effects have been examined in several research articles. Jing Quin et al. synthesized pyrrolidinium-based ILs and poly(ionic membranes) to examine their antibacterial properties. Based off their findings, we synthesized new pyrrolidinium-based ILs with different chain lengths (C = 9, 11) and examined their antibacterial properties. The ILs we synthesized were tested by subjecting Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) to the ILs and measuring the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).
