The chemical industry relies heavily on the use of transition metal catalysts for the economical production of a wide variety of petrochemicals in use today. Catalysis allow transformations to be carried out under mild conditions with high selectivity and yield. As a result, it is imperative to develop new catalyst systems that offer increased activity with inexpensive materials under mild conditions. In the last few decades N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as a powerful class of carbon-based ligands. Owing to their unique electronic and steric properties, they have been incorporated in a large variety of catalytically active metal complexes. Vital to the advancement of NHCbased catalysts has been the design and synthesis of new NHCs that display an array of electronic and steric properties. Herein, the synthesis and structural characterization of the new NHC system and its corresponding palladium complex is presented.
