An alternative general chemistry curriculum called Chemistry, Life, the Universe and Everything (CLUE) was developed based on knowledge of how students learn and evidence of student difficulties. CLUE is a two-semester university general chemistry course built around four core ideas: electrostatic and bonding interactions, atomic/molecular structure and properties, energy, and change and stability in chemical systems. The curriculum has now been implemented in a range of classroom environments (400+ classroom with recitation, 100+ classroom without recitation, and 150+ active learning classroom). Multiple mixed-method studies have been conducted to measure the impact of the implementation of this alternative curriculum on student understanding within these diverse classroom environments. A description of the curriculum and impact of the CLUE curriculum implementation at multiple institutions will be presented.
