The flow synthesis of ZIF-8 nanoparticles in microfabricated reactors under laminar and segmented flow regimes was investigated. The nucleation and growth of the ZIF-8 nanoparticles are dictated by reaction and transport processes. Laminar flow produces larger particles with broader particle size distribution due to radial dispersion. Rapid nucleation caused by the internal micromixing in segmented flow resulted in smaller particle size. However, solvent evaporation can lead to greater range of particle size but can be remedied by using solvent-saturated gases. A mathematical equations that relate particle size and fluid flow conditions were established that can reliably predict the flow synthesis of ZIF-8 nanoparticles. Similar approach can be extended to flow synthesis of other MOF nanoparticles.
