The magnetism of ultrathin films (a few atomic planes in thickness) is dominated by the presence of magnetic atoms in contact with the substrate and also with the top environment. This well-established phenomenon, often referred to as “surface magnetism”, has recently led to the control of magnetism with voltage. In fact, it has been theoretically predicted from ab initio calculation [1] and experimentally demonstrated with solid state stacks - magnetic layer / oxide / gate electrode - that the application of a sufficiently large electric field (EF) enables modifying the magnetic properties of an ultrathin magnetic film [2].<br/><br/>Because much greater and uniform electric fields may be generated at the metal / electrolyte interface without any dielectric breakdown, we exploited this interface to investigate EF effects on the magnetism of epitaxial Co ultrathin layers using an all electrochemical approach where magnetic properties are investigated using <i>in situ</i> real time magnetic measurements. In this talk, it will be shown that the potential dependence of Co layer magnetism provides insights into the structure of the electrochemical interface. H- and CO-covered cobalt surfaces will be compared and complementary quartz crystal microbalance measurements will be also presented.
