Ligands play a central role in dictating the electronic properties of metal complexes to which they are coordinated. A fundamental understanding of changes in ligand properties can be used as design principles for more efficient catalysts. Designing ligands that have multiple protonation states that will change the properties of the coordination complex would be useful as potential ways of controlling catalysis, for example as an on/off switch. Specifically, we have characterized hydroxyl-substituted polypyridyl ligands coordinated to ruthenium. This work reports on the hydroxyl-substituted ligand, tpyph(OH) (4'-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2, 2':6', 2''-terpyridine) and its coordination to ruthenium in two different metal complexes. We were able to synthesize and characterize [Ru(tpy)(tpyph(OH))][PF6]2 and [Ru(tpyph(OH))2][PF6]2. The complexes were studied by infrared spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, ultraviolet/visible absorbance spectroscopy, and electrochemistry. Here we will present our initial characterization, computational, structural, and electronic analysis to understand the effects of changes in protonation state on the complexes.
