Secondary coordination sphere modifications have become an important approach for fundamentally modifying the chemistry of known systems. Although it is known that simple cations (e.g. alkali and alkaline earth elements) can have a profound role in catalytic bond transformations, systematic control of cations in the secondary coordination sphere remains under-studied. Herein we report the synthesis of a family of multidentate phosphine ligands bearing aza-crown ethers designed to controllably tether alkali metals in the secondary coordination sphere. The coordination chemistry of these ligands with molybdenum and palladium will also be discussed.
