The ICE Concentration Linked with Extractive Stirrer (ICECLES) method uses a combination of stir-bar sorptive extraction and freeze concentration to pre-concentrate organic analytes. This results in lower levels of detection using a gas chromatogram-mass spectrometer. The ICECLES method was used to analyze levoglucosan (LVG), a monosaccharide anhydride produced when cellulose is burned at temperatures greater than 300°C. The estimated limit of detection is 0.5 µM in deionized water. This procedure was modified to use ICECLES to measure LVG in plasma samples, which may show human exposure to wood smoke and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. This procedure gives a lower limit of detection than directly injecting samples in the GC-MS.
