The upcoming Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University will use a high-power 238U beam to produce rare isotopes for nuclear physics experiments. When unused portions of the beam are stopped in a water-cooled beam dump, many nuclear reactions will occur, leading to the production of valuable isotopes in situ, like 211Rn. Radon-211 is a generator parent of the alpha-emitting medical isotope 211At, and during full power irradiation it is expected to be produced at a rate in excess of 1010 atoms/second. However, co-production of other radon and astatine isotopes is unavoidable, meaning that the procedure for harvesting 211Rn and generating 211At must be optimized for achieving maximum radionuclidic purity. We will present a model of a simple system for generating 211At from harvested radon isotopes at FRIB. The model predicts that more than 50 mCi of 211At can be eluted daily with greater than 99.9% isotopic purity.
