Research and development of cost-effective and highly efficient catalysts for the kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for improving the efficiency of many renewable energy-related techniques such as water splitting and metal-air battery. In this work, we synthesized sebacate anions intercalated NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles with a uniform size distribution of 50-70nm and a large interlayer spacing around 1.3-1.4nm for use as OER catalyst. This catalyst shows an overpotential of 294mV at 10mA/cm<sup>-2</sup> OER current density under alkaline condition, which is remarkably low among all the conductive substrate-free NiFe LDH OER catalysts prepared to date. The high OER activity of the sebacate anions intercalated NiFe LDH nanoparticles could be attributed to the expanded interlayer spacing as well as their small particle size. This study provides a potential new strategy to improve the activity of LDH-type OER catalysts.<br/>
