One major push in the field of sensor development is production of very cheap and easy to use sensors that require minimal external equipment. Microfluidic Paper-based Analytical Devices (mPADs) have received significant attention in this field because they are cheap (costing pennies per device), easy to use, and can carry out a wide range of chemical assays. Detection with these devices is normally done with colorimetric method but these methods can be limited in sensitivity and selectivity. This talk will focus on recent developments from the Henry laboratory using electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs) with applications in both environmental and clinical diagnostics. ePADs are attractive in this application space because they are made from low cost materials and utilize simple, low cost instrumentation for analysis. While significant developments have been made in this field, key issues of electrode fabrication and characterization as well as field based applications have been limited. Here, analysis of heavy metals using chemically-modified electrodes to assess environmental and occupational exposure will be discussed first as an example of environmental diagnostics. Our laboratory has developed a wearable aerosol sampler that collects samples onto a small filter. We have used the system combined with our ePAD to characterize exposure to toxic metals among a cohort of students in Southern, CA. Next, new ePAD systems for detecting bacteria and viruses will be presented as an example of clinical diagnostics. Using a long standing motif of incorporating solid metal microwires into microfluidic devices, we have created impedance-based biosensors included within ePADs that can detect virus particles with detection limits below 100 total particles in 50 μL of sample volume. <br/>
