Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is one of the most widespread strategies for additive manufacturing due to its ease of implementation and versatility. However, it is currently limited in scope due to inherently poor mechanical properties and limited functionality. Herein commercially available telechelic oligomers (e.g. Jeffamine®, poly(ε-caprolactone)) are functionalized with a self-reporting hetero Diels-Alder moiety to impart dynamic covalent properties to printable networks. The thermally induced retro Diels-Alder reaction at typical printing temperatures breaks up the filament into its constituent components for improved processability during extrusion and allows for the incorporation of composite reinforcement capable of induced alignment upon printing. Thermal and rheological analysis is performed to characterize the cycloreversion process. The mechanical properties are compared at various crosslinking ratios and print directions. Additionally, our attempts at fabricating various blends of conventional filaments and the aforementioned systems will be presented.
