The development and optimization of a new synthesis involving electrophilic halocyclization to generate benzo[b]thiophenes, thiophenes, and selenophenes was established. The reaction uses a copper(II) salt, an external oxidant, and generic sodium salts as the electrophile to perform the halocyclization. A series of dynamic substrates were used to determine the ability of the reaction conditions to tolerate various functional groups and generate considerable high yields. Benzo[b]thiophenes and thiophenes are well known for their various useful biological activities. Benzo[b]thiophenes are currently being used in various antidepressants, antibacterial inhibitors, and antifungal drugs. Benzo[b]thiophenes, thiophenes, and selenophenes have also been used in material applications for OLED and other solar cell applications. The progress made with this method allows for each of these functionalized derivatives to be generated with a wide range of applications.
