A new synthesis approach was developed to crystallize a sub-100 nm MOF thin film on graphene oxides. The nucleation and growth of MOF on graphene oxide was observed under electron microscope. Detailed analysis by ToF-SIMS suggests the initial step involved the adsorption of organic ligands on graphene oxide followed by the subsequent formation of structure building units (SBUs). Surface nucleation is uniform and the MOF crystal grew rapidly to cover the entire surface forming a completely cladded graphene oxide. The composite structure display interesting thermal and electrical properties. Reaction study on ZIF-8/graphene oxide indicate that the material is active for Knoevenagel condensation reaction, and has higher conversion rate than the ZIF-8 nanoparticles.
