An increasing volume of cases in forensic drug chemistry calls for a more rapid screening method for the identification of unknown illicit substances. Direct Analysis in Real Time (DART) coupled to the Thermo Q-Exactive Orbitrap is an extremely sensitive and rapid technique that can be used to identify compounds present in a sample at trace levels with a high level of precision and accuracy. Minimal sample preparation required for DART analysis makes this technique simple to use and further reduces total analysis time. In addition to the MS capabilities of this instrument, simultaneous MS/MS scans can be acquired for the identification of the detected ions. The developed method has been applied to the analysis of over 150 controlled and non-controlled substances in a variety of samples. In each instance, the substances were identified in less than 30 seconds, with the true mass of each compound observed within 3 ppm.
