Dendrimers are well-defined branched macromolecules that are built in a stepwise manner, which are accepted as being a special class of polymers with a monodisperse architecture. Dendrimers’ well-defined and multivalent branched monodispersed structure present several advantages when comparing with random-coiled polymers. Aiming at Nanomedicine applications, the controlled multivalency on dendrimers can be used to attach drug molecules, imaging agents, stimuli-responsive moieties, targeting groups and/or solubilizing units at precise locations. Therefore, the unique properties of dendrimers that prospect their use in nanomedicine applications are directly related to their multifunctional well-defined structure. We have developed synthetic strategies to obtain heterofunctional dendrimers with well-defined structure, using innovative AB2C1 and AB1C1D1 dendrons. The goal of the current project is the development of new biocompatible multifunctional nanomaterials based on well-defined multifunctional dendrimers, for application in nanomedicine. These materials are also being explored as multivalent platforms for SPR and electrochemical biosensors.
