The NiMo supported on γ-Al2O3 catalysts were synthesized with metal loading of 1.7 and 2.4 mmol of nickel and molybdenum per gm of γ-Al2O3 respectively by co-incipient wetness impregnation method. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of stearic acid (SA) was conducted using synthesized catalysts at three different calcination/reduction temperatures at 873K, 923K and 973K represented as 1.7N2.4MA873, 1.7N2.4MA923 and 1.7N2.4MA973 respectively for production of liquid hydrocarbon. The aim of the present work was to investigate the role of calcination/reduction temperature in catalytic activity of NiMo supported γ-Al2O3 catalyst for HDO of SA. The catalysts were characterized by various characterization techniques such as BET, TPR, H2 pulse chemisorption and XRD. The Ni and NiMo complexes were identified by powder XRD. Conversion of stearic acid was increased with increasing calcination/reduction temperatures. Hence, enhanced in catalytic activity may be due to increasing metal dispersion with increasing calcination/reduction temperature of catalysts (shown in Table 1). The catalytic activity was measured in terms of HDO of SA and products selectivity to n-octadecane(C18) and n-heptadecane(C17). The conversion of SA was found maximum with 1.7N2.4MA973 supported on γ-Al2O3 while decreasing with decreasing the calcination/reduction temperature. About 95% conversion of stearic acid was observed in presence of 1.7N2.4MA973 catalyst after 360 min of reaction compared to only 62 and 29% conversion for 1.7N2.4MA923 and 1.7N2.4MA873 respectively. C18 alkane was found as the major products over NiMo supported on γ-Al2O3 catalyst. 1.7N2.4MA973 catalyst is highly active for HDO of SA due to the formation of NiMo complexes and also suitable for reaction route which produce C18 as major product.
