The treatment of infectious disease as it stands now is dependent on the use of antibiotics. Since the introduction of penicillin in clinical therapy, a wide variety of antibiotics have been used for a number of applications. This wide use has led to a significant issue, that of antibacterial resistance. Due to the great adaptability of microorganisms, resistance to the compounds intended to neutralize these organisms makes for greater difficulty in treating the disease. More careful and vigilant use of antibiotics is essential to preventing the development of more resistant strains of pathogenic organisms. To combat the currently present resistant strains however, more treatments must be developed. The goal for this project is to investigate a family of antibacterial compounds based around a diphenyl urea scaffold. Functionalization of the phenyl groups offers opportunity to create novel antibiotics with varied functional groups allowing us to develop an SAR for this class of structures. Stemming from precious work, the project described herein focuses on variation of an ester group attached to one of the phenyl rings. The diphenyl urea compounds synthesized will be surveyed through Kirby Disk Diffusion tests and minimal inhibitory concentration tests (MIC) to develop their effectiveness.
