Nitrides (a less-studied field of solid-state chemistry) include many useful materials and have the promise of many more. Some noteworthy discoveries include GaN, used in Blu-Ray lasers and Si3N4 used in ball bearings, hammers and other rigid and sturdy materials. Nitride synthesis is challenging to explore due to the air sensitivity of many starting materials, however, progress has been made. New quaternary nitride crystals containing lithium, calcium and a third metal were synthesized inside of niobium tubes at high heat for long durations. Numerous new compounds were formed by reacting Li3N, Ca3N2 and NaN3 and several other metals or metal nitrides under approximately 30 atmospheres of pressure in a tube furnace. The compounds were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction.
