In this study, a survey composed of open-ended questions and Likert scale items was constructed to gather students’ perspectives on various types of general chemistry pre-laboratory activities. Students were asked to describe their current pre-lab activities, and to report on the perceived purpose and effectiveness of the pre-lab activities. They were also asked to report on the perceived advantages, disadvantages, and effectiveness of several of the more common types of pre-lab activities, including writing pre-lab journals, watching videos/presentation slides, taking pre-lab quizzes online, and taking pre-lab quizzes in lab. Results of the administration of the survey to a sample of general chemistry students will be presented and discussed.
