Among the many challenges in developing new high energy density dielectric materials, one particular challenge is to produce a freestanding film that has high energy density and a large dielectric constant with low loss. Previous studies have shown that tin (poly)esters exhibit large dielectric constants &gt;6, but with less than ideal free-standing film quality. On the contrary, polyimides have previously proved to produce excellent films, but with less impressive dielectric constant values ~3.5. In attempt to merge the desired properties of the polyimide and the tin (poly)ester, hybrid films of a blend of polyimide p(BTDAHDA) with organometallic tin (poly)esters were processed. A polyimide was blended with poly(dimethyltin 3,3-dimethylglutarate) [pDMTDMG] and poly(dimethyltin glutarate) [pDMTGlu] in different ratios to achieve an optimum condition for a processable freestanding film. The free-standing films that resulted from the blend yielded high dielectric constants similar to those of the organometallic. The threshold ratio of tin (poly)ester to polyimide constant was found to be with 60% of Sn-polyester with 40% of the p(BTDAHDA) with average dielectric constant of 6.2 ± 0.29 and 5.5 ± 0.45 for p(DMTDMG) and p(DMTGlu) hybrid with loss ~ 2-4% at room temperature, respectively. The hybrid film of p(BTDAHDA) with p(DMTDMG) exhibits a breakdown voltage of 464 MV/m from the Weibull distribution.
