Plants are able to communicate and interact with its associated belowground microbial organisms by exudation of a diverse range of bioactive chemical compounds from their roots. Through this interaction, plants are expected to be able to shape and selectively chose a specific group of beneficial microorganisms to overcome an infection caused by a detrimental pathogen. Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana) (one wildtype and two mutants, deficient in the biosynthesis of indole glucosinolates and flavonoids) and the pathogens Fusarium oxysporium and Verticillium dahlia will be used as the model system. Two different approaches i.e. untargeted and targeted analysis will be used for analysing the phytochemicals from the root exudate in the absence and presence of the pathogen in the soil. Chemical analysis with the targeted approach will be done on an Applied Biosystems 3200 LC-MS-QTRAP system and information dependent acquisition (IDA) will be used to generate useful MS/MS data. Selected results from this work will be presented in the meeting. We expect the final results to support the development of more sustainable systems for plant production in which chemical inputs can be reduced.
