Titanium is a commonly used implant material that can fail due to aseptic loosening, which is the absence of proper integration between the implant material and the remaining bone at the site of implantation. Aseptic loosening is one of the leading causes of revision surgeries. Immobilizing osteoinductive molecules to the surface may help combat aseptic loosening. In this work, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 12-mercaptododecylphosphonic acid were formed on the surface of titanium and characterized by Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, contact angle, and Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. These SAMs present a thiol at the interface allowing for the anchoring of bioactive molecules, such as KRSRC through disulfide bond formation. A disulfide bond was formed using the model compound cysteine. The linking and effectiveness of the cell adhesion peptide will be assessed through osteoblast growth and proliferation.
