Emissions control catalysts have led to significant improvements in air quality and people's health while providing power, transportation, and products to improve quality of life. Catalysts are applied to both stationary and mobile sources to clean the exhaust of combustion processes and to provide a healthy environment.<br/><br/>One of the key challenges in catalyst design for stationary emission sources and aircraft cabin air quality applications is developing catalysts that can withstand unique and often poorly defined operating environments and still deliver the required performance for the required catalyst lifetime. Historical experience and data analytics have shown themselves to be useful guides and tools in these cases. The information gleamed from catalyst deactivation field studies can be used to diagnose process issues and inform our understanding during the catalyst design stage of the unique conditions encountered in similar applications.<br/><br/>This presentation will share recent examples of the value that data analytics guided by historical experience may bring to bear on specific applications to improve performance and process reliability and reduce non-performance risk. An analysis of field-aged catalysts in the power sector identified differences among turbine types that fashion an intrinsic risk profile for the application, which can be considered in new designs or used as guidance in understanding existing ones. Data analytics applied to aircraft cabin air ozone converters returned for scheduled service identified opportunities for aircraft fleet operators to differentiate themselves from standard performance assumptions, thus uncovering value and minimizing non-performance risk. In these ways, evaluation of catalyst field performance leveraged by data analytics informs new catalyst development and process and operability improvement.
