The disruption of bacterial iron acquisition represents a new strategy for combatting pathogens. Bacteria synthesize and secrete compounds with high iron affinity in order to sequester this essential nutrient for their metabolic uses. Accordingly, disruption of bacterial siderophore biosynthesis has been shown to be effective at inhibiting bacterial virulence and growth, in particular, small molecule inhibitors of these biosynthetic enzymes would be attractive targets for new antibiotic research. The baulamycins were identified in a high-throughput screen search for inhibitors of the enzymes SbnE and AsbA, siderophore biosynthesis enzymes found in <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> and <i>Bacillus anthracis</i>, respectively. The originally published structure was not correct, and via diverted total synthesis, we have synthesized both the originally reported structure as well as the true structures of baulamycins A and B.
