Amines are generally poor directing groups for C-H activation, and as a result often require modification to become viable substrates for directed C-H activation. The two prevailing strategies are 1) formation of robust amides, or 2) formation of imines. Each of these strategies has their own positive aspects, as well as some drawbacks. One goal of our research program is to develop a hybrid strategy that takes the best of both amide and imine-type directing groups, such as chemical robusticity and in situ/mild condensation respectively, to realize a more sustainable directing group strategy for the C-H functionalization of amine substrates.
