The incorporation of guest chemical species into the nano-cavity of open-porous metal-organic framework (MOF) hosts provides a powerful platform to tune electronic, optical/optoelectronic, and mechanical properties and to develop enhanced materials for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Due to the abundance of MOF candidates (thousands of MOFs exist) and the board range of guest materials (from metal-based compounds to polymers) for the MOF-guest systems, the unique and diversified MOF-guest interactions provide so many opportunities for exploring novel physical/chemical phenomena. Meanwhile, the emerging tunable properties of the MOF-guest systems and their derivatives can be beneficial for numerous applications, such as electronics, sensing, energy storage, energy conversion, and catalysis.<br/>Here, we will cover the general considerations we made for preparing and characterizing MOF-guest systems and our recent progress on some MOF-guests systems, particularly about the guest-induced properties and novel nanostructured materials derived from them. One of the case studies is the conducting polymer@MOF system (<i>e.g.</i> poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)@MOF), where the conducting polymer guest can significantly enhance the electrical conductivity of the MOF host.<br/>On a more general level, the challenges and opportunities we meet in MOF-guest systems can provide some hints for the future work related to chemistry/physics in confined nanoscaled geometries.
