Conventional biosensors that monitor critical information (e.g., temperature, ions, metabolites, and neurotransmitters) are utilized with rigid electrodes and thus limit intimate integration with our bodies that are soft, curved, and stretched. Indeed, the mismatch of mechanical properties causes shear forces between sensors and dynamic living biological systems, which damage tissue and induce the foreign body response, thus leading to inaccurate measurements. Most of the sensors are limited to determine chemical and physical information at the surface of the biological system. Analytical technologies, therefore, have sought to enable real-time assessment in the transversal direction while exhibiting great mechanical biocompatibility. Here, I will present the ultrathin, flexible, and injectable biosensors capable of real-time thermal characterization, neurotransmitter detection, and mechanical (modulus) sensing. The materials and designs of the needle-type device platform will discuss regarding the enabling technologies for the minimally invasive analytical system directly insert into the tissue in a manner that does not affect the natural mechanical motions or no damage to the biological system.
