Inefficient dissipation of thermal energy is a key obstacle to the use of semiconductor nanomaterials in high-power optoelectronic devices such as LEDs and lasers.  Better fundamental understanding of the production and transport of thermal energy at the nanoscale would enable the design of nanomaterials more resistant to overheating.  This requires direct observation of molecular vibrations and phonons and their evolution in a non-equilibrium system on picosecond time scales.  Femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS) is a technique for measuring changes in a Raman spectrum induced by exposure to a femtosecond laser pulse with exceptional spectral and time resolution.  Such changes can be linked to excitations of individual vibrational and phonon modes in a sample.  We demonstrate the use of FSRS to observe vibrational dynamics and the exchange of vibrational energy with &lt;200 fs time resolution.
