Like marine oil spills before the <i>Deepwater Horizon</i> (<i>DWH</i>) accident to those that may follow, negative impacts on fish and shellfish in the affected areas are of utmost concern. From potential long-term, ecological impacts on coastal and offshore resources that affect economic livelihoods and cultural norms to immediate, and perhaps sustained, impacts on the safety, and importantly the perceptions of safety, of consuming potentially contaminated seafood, oil spills have profound impacts on a major coastal economies, seasonal family and community behaviors, and simply put, a way of life. Considering those “farming” fish and shellfish (i.e. seafood harvestors), to those consuming the farmed seafood, to those studying the aftermath and safety of affected marine agricultural products, the lines between these groups of convenience blend and blur in both expected and unexpected ways. Told from the vantage of emergent “teams” focused on local and regional fish and shellfish, we explore the specifics of “defined”, policy-based, scientific health risk assessments, local perceptions of seafood quality and safety among consumers, which bridge all three of the aforementioned groups, and finally difficult-to-capture, rarely studied deep-felt concerns and narratives of the “farmers”, families, and communities.
