Aurones, a sub-class of the flavonoid family, and primarily responsible for imparting bright yellow color to flowers and fruits are emerging as a potential therapeutic heterocyclic scaffold for design and development of pharmaceuticals. They have been reported to exhibit a broad spectrum of bioactivity, including antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. Similar to that of other flavonoids, as a secondary metabolite, a number of glycosylated aurones have been isolated from plants. To date, the study of glycosylated derivatives has been limited to only a few naturally occurring ones and no syntheses have been reported. In order to study the effect of glycosylation in the biological activity of aurones, a series of peracetylated glycosyl derivatives of various synthetic aurones were synthesized and subjected to various biological screening. Comparison of the activities of glycosylated and acetylated, gylcosylated and deacetylated and non-glycosylated aurones will be discussed.
