Photoelectron spectroscopy provides information of materials surface which is crucial for understanding catalytic performance on a heterogeneous catalyst as heterogeneous catalysis is performed on surface of the catalyst. Driven by pressure and temperature factors, surface of a catalyst in gas phase at a relatively high pressure during catalysis could be different from that before catalysis or at room temperature after catalysis at high temperature. We have used lab-based ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to reveal active phases of catalysts performing catalysis at high temperature in mixture of reactants at relatively high pressure, track stable intermediates formed by reactants, dynamic surfaces of catalysts at a relatively high temperatures and pressures. I will present examples of these functions of AP-XPS in our recent studies of catalysis and discuss how AP-XPS could be used in designing catalysts.<br/>
