Methacrylate monomer having an inverse-phosphorylcholine (iPC) at the side chain (MiPC) was synthesized by 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate, 2-chloro-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane (COP), and isopropanol in a 48% yield. Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of MiPC and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) were carried out to give poly(MiPC) and poly(MPC) brushes on silicon wafer, respectively. Both polymers are water-soluble, however, the surface free energy of poly(MiPC) was estimated to be 55.8 mN m-1, which was much lower than that of poly(MPC) (73.8 mN m-1). Force curve measurement of poly(MPC) brush by using PC-modified silica probe with 25 mm diameter showed extremely lower than 1 nN in water at 298 K, whereas adhesion force between poly(MiPC) and PC-modified probe revealed 21 nN in water. These results indicate strong dipole-dipole interaction between PC and iPC group and weak interaction between PC and PC.
