The American Chemical Society (ACS), as underscored in its vision statement, strives to improve people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry.  Likewise, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is a global organization that provides objective scientific expertise and develops the essential tools for the application and communication of chemical knowledge for the benefit of humankind and the world.  Both entities accomplish their missions by fostering sustainable development, providing a common language for chemistry, and advocating the free exchange of scientific information.  In particular, the ACS Committee on Nomenclature, Terminology, and Symbols (NTS) addresses a variety of topics related to the naming of compounds, the definition of chemical terms and concepts, and the use of symbols and units.  This presentation will provide an overview of the functions and activities of NTS and use recent advances in the nomenclature of inorganic chemistry to illustrate its educational and outreach roles within ACS and the chemistry community at large.
