We are exploring the use of BiPO4 microparticles as an alternative to TiO2, and as a route to more energy-efficient photocatalytic processes. Even at particle sizes over 2 µm with relatively low specific surface area, BiPO4 achieved faster degradation of model organic contaminants than TiO2 suspensions under UVC irradiation in bench tests. Additionally certain BiPO4 polymorphs were shown to mineralize perfluorooctanoic acid many times faster than previously reported heterogeneous and homogeneous advanced oxidation approaches. Material properties, PFAS degradation mechanisms, and considerations for large scale BiPO4/UV process design will be discussed.
