With growing populations and dwindling freshwater resources, desalination is a fast growing technology for potable drinking water, particularly for arid locations around the world.  While seawater often contains lower levels of dissolved organic matter (DOC) than traditional freshwater sources, it also contains very high bromide and iodide levels that can give rise to the formation of toxic brominated and iodinated DBPs when disinfectants are used following desalination.  This presentation will discuss new disinfection by-products (DBPs) identified in desalinated water from three locations—two in the U.S. and one in the United Arab Emirates.  New DBPs were identified with a comprehensive approach, using high resolution mass spectrometry, and approximately 60 high priority DBPs were quantified. In addition, the toxicology of treated waters, along with toxicology of individual new DBPs identified will also be discussed, and the composition and relative toxicity of desalinated drinking water will be compared to traditional drinking water from freshwater sources.    <br/>
