The legal cannabis industry is in its infancy and there are an endless variety of ways that chemists can contribute. An overview of chemistry-related job roles and duties will be given in addition to highlighting the various types of training required. Given the huge need for research and data on all things cannabis-related and the complicated relationship to federally-funded research, much of the data being generated in the US is within private companies. Some of the research questions this company has been able to investigate and suggestions for how data can be shared more widely will be covered. Additionally, examples will be given on ways to engage with regulatory, business, and scientific partners to ensure science-based policies and data-based decisions are being made. In order for the cannabis industry to be legitimized, respected, and safely integrated into the medical realm and society, it’s imperative that scientists get involved at all levels.
