In this talk, we will introduce two photo-sensitive benzoxazines. The first one is bis(4-hydroxylbenzylidiene)acetone/aniline-based benzoxazine (BHBA-a), preparing from bis(4-hydroxylbenzylidiene)acetone (BHBA), aniline and paraformaldehyde. The second one is 1,3-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propanone (BHP)/aniline based benzoxazine (BHP-a), preparing from 1,3-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propanone (BHP), aniline and paraformaldehyde. The double bond of BHBA-a and BHP-a is thermally active, and the –(O=C)-C=C linkage is photo-sensitive. Both benzoxazines underwent dimerization through the [2π + 2π] cycloaddition through UV irradiation. Therefore, two procedures were applied to cure BHBA-a and BHP-a. The first one was thermal curing of the double bond of bisbenzylidieneacetone/bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propanone and oxazine moieties. The second one was photo curing of the bisbenzylidieneacetone/ bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propanone moiety, followed by thermal curing of the oxazine moiety. Thermal properties of thermosets based on the two procedures were evaluated. The Tg values of poly(BHBA-a) and poly(BHP-a) are much higher than that of a traditional bisphenol/aniline-based benzoxazine thermoset. We conclude that the thermal curing of double bond of bisbenzylidieneacetone/bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propanone and photo dimerization of bisbenzylidieneacetone/bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propanone contribute to the good thermal properties.
