The military specification for diesel fuel requires that the petroleum-based and bio-based alternative fuels have a minimum cetane number for proper combustion in diesel engines. In this work, the physical properties of mixtures containing low cetane compounds were measured. The properties tested were those that impact the transport and combustion of fuels in engines and safety: density, viscosity, surface tension, flash point, speed of sound, and bulk modulus. This poster will present results of mixtures containing aromatic compounds and branched alkanes and blends of these mixtures with petroleum-based and bio-based alternative fuels.
