This presentation will highlight our efforts toward the iterative combination of covalent and supramolecular interactions for the construction of hierarchically-assembled nanoscopic materials, which achieve functions that are based on their complexities. Earlier fundamental investigations of the solution-state assembly of molecular bottlebrush block polymers (left panel below) revealed unique behaviors <i>vs</i>. their smaller and simpler linear block polymer analogs. The molecular bottlebrush architecture was then extended to compositions and structures that were designed to undergo vertically-aligned assembly upon substrates (right panel below) to allow for negative- and positive-tone photoresist patterning toward the fabrication of ultrahigh-resolution microelectronic device technologies. Coincidentally, we have developed and studied both magnetic shell crosslinked knedel-like nanoparticles (MSCKs) and magnetically-active hybrid networks (MHNs), each designed as high-capacity hybrid magnetic-organic sequestrants for recovery of crude oil. Most recently, we have been merging these disparate concepts to develop solution-substrate interface-promoted assembly and disassembly processes for the manufacture of complex hybrid inorganic-organic nanoparticles (HIONs). An overview of these efforts over the past <i>ca</i>. seven years and an update of the current state of our progress will be described.
