The developers of cryo-electron microscopy earned the 2017 Nobel Prize for revolutionizing the field of biomolecular imaging, transforming visualizations of certain proteins from poor-resolution “blobs” into high-resolution detailed structures.  Students can now 3D print and examine such biomolecules with ease which is just one of many applications of using 3D printing in support of an undergraduate chemistry curriculum.  3D printing arguably allows students to better understand chemistry by depicting details about chemical structures often lacking in traditional modeling kits.  Creating 3D printed chemical models also encourages creativity and technological literacy – skills considered essential for 21st century professionals.  Stetson University faculty have incorporated hands-on 3D printing activities into physical chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry classwork and labs resulting in increased enthusiasm and motivation for learning the material. To support these assignments, the University has developed an Innovation Lab located in the campus library that provides a centralized environment including multiple printers of various types, subsidized supplies, technical assistance, and extended hours of access. Resource costs to introduce 3D printing into the curriculum are therefore borne by the University rather than the Chemistry Department. Assignments, lab exercises, and the advantages of University-supported innovation spaces will be discussed. Examples of 3D printed material will be presented.
