NMR spectroscopy has been used for decades to determine structure and coupling constants in various molecules. However, in instances when multiple peaks occur with similar chemical shift, peaks can be obscured within complexes of other peaks. This makes it difficult to discern peaks, effectively masking information. By using 2D J-resolved NMR, previously masked coupling constants in peracetylated pentose carbohydrates have been detected. Additionally, resolution is much greater revealing long-range coupling that are not resolved in typical proton NMR spectra. Coupling constants were measured from the recorded data, and compared to coupling constants from calculations. It was concluded that 2D J-resolved NMR is a viable method for determining coupling constants that are otherwise masked in other NMR readings.
