The Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy Consortium (ChemCatBio) leverages unique U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national lab capabilities to address technical risks associated with accelerating the development of catalysts and related technologies for the commercialization of biomass-derived fuels and chemicals, leading to enhanced energy security and national leadership in the global bioeconomy. Currently ChemCatBio consists of the National Renewable Energy Lab and the Argonne, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, and Pacific Northwest National Labs. The consortium works with industry to rapidly transition R&D discoveries into commercial processes and grow the bioeconomy in the United States. Current research encompasses the following three core topics: 1) Upgrading of synthesis gas and synthesis gas-derived intermediates; 2) Catalytic fast pyrolysis; and 3) Upgrading of lignin, carbohydrates, and other biologically derived intermediates. The consortium also pursues three enabling projects: 1) Advanced characterization and synthesis; 2) Catalyst cost estimation tool; 3) Computational physics and chemistry. The consortium members have published more than 60 publications to date on ChemCatBio topics. This presentation will introduce the ChemCatBio Consortium and provide context for the importance of this research consortium to the U.S. bioeconomy.
