<br/>Molecular confinement usually refers to encapsulation within macrocyclic frameworks or capsules from either self-assembled or covalently “stitched-together” atoms, yet molecular confinement can also occur with other forms of cages. For example, the “confiner” may in some other fashion restrict the targeted guest to a certain spatial area, as within walls. This presentation will explore molecular confinement from multiple vantage points, starting with simple macrocyclic encirclement, to entrapment within three-dimensional bicyclic and tricyclic cages, to the use of molecular walls to restrict target guests within walled-off spaces, as shown in Figure 1.
