Carbon monoxide is a gas used in pure form for a number of applications as well as in mixtures that can be used as fuel.  Applications include use as a reducing agent in metal processing , as a moderator in the etch rate of silicon wafers, and surprisingly as a therapeutic agent at low concentrations in the treatment of medical maladies including mitigation of organ rejection in transplant patients.  Presence of metal carbonyls and the amount can be critical.  Some carbonyls such as nickel carbonyl are highly toxic exceeding that of the carbon monoxide matrix. High concentration in gaseous fuels can be catrostrophic to engine and turbine failure.  Until now analytical techniques such as GC-ECD and GC-AED have been lacking in robustness, simplicity, and the ability to provide low level confident calibrations.  A discussion of some of these methods and a novel solution using GC-ICP-MS with simultaeous gas and aqueous aspiration will be presented.
