<br/>The race to discover new organic photochromic compounds has sparked many rich and diverse efforts in recent years. Testing the boundaries of structural diversity in newly discovered classes of photochromes provides opportunities to better understand the potentially novel, functional property changes that arise from photo-isomerization. We have found that heteroaryl acroleins can readily condense with bindone to provide highly colored materials in a single step from commercially available starting materials. Herein we present the synthesis and characterization of bindone derived heteroaryl dienyl photochromes, along with an investigation into their photophysical properties.
