The recognition of large anions is a new area of investigation driven by recent discoveries of size-matched receptors, and motivated by a growing range of topical impact areas. When those receptors can assemble, the ability to capture increasing larger anions also grows. This talk will cover recent works with shape-persistent macrocycles, such as cyanostar and tricarbazole triazolophanes, and their characteristic propensities for binding unusual anions with the aid of self-complementary p stacking. Of ongoing study are investigations into novel radical anions as well as of <i>anti</i>-electrostatic anion-anion dimers and oligomers that are protected inside the cavities of stacked macrocycles. The latter are also capable of supporting hierarchical self-assemblies.
