Self-assembly is a phenomenon ubiquitous in nature used to generate complex architectures from individual building blocks through noncovalent interactions resulting in thermodynamically favored products. The purpose of this project is togenerate self-assembled Ti(IV)-based architectures through the reaction of titanium(IV) isopropoxide with a rationally designed tetraphenolic ligand. Via a Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction of terphenyl boronic acid and 4,4’-dibromobiphenyl, a tetramethoxyoctaphenyl compound was synthesized with 67% yield confirmed via proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). The octaphenyl compound was subsequently deprotected yielding 90% using boron tribromide. Following the formation of LPh2H4, the zigzag-shaped tetrahydroxyoligophenylene strand, the titanium coordination chemistry was performed both with and without additional ligands, respectively. A tetrameric ring helicate was obtained in a multi-components self-assembly approach after dissolving LPh2H4 and 2,2’-bipyrimidine (bpym) in chloroform and coordinating with Ti(IV). A tetrameric circular structure formulated as [Ti4(LPh2)4(bpym)4] was confirmed by mass spectrometry, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and DOSY measurement.
