Simulations have long been known to improve learning, motivation and engagement while reducing costs in fields such as aviation. These benefits now extend to online laboratory simulations, with next-generation Labster virtual laboratories showing the same kinds of improvements when used either alongside or as an alternative to traditional teaching methods.<br/><br/>Many distance-learning technologies digitize lectures, textbooks, and physical laboratory experiences. It is currently possible to provide students access to 3D-molecular animations, self-paced inquiry-based lab courses, and simulated versions of expensive or otherwise inaccessible instrumentation. Here we examined the impact that Labster virtual labs have on student learning in a one-semester general biochemistry course lacking a traditional hands-on laboratory component. Our findings suggest that Labster virtual labs help students understand and appreciate how content knowledge can be applied to new settings. These results also highlight some of the benefits which a virtual lab alternative can offer for resource-limited academic departments.
