Acid gases such as SO2, NO2, produced in all kinds of energy applications including automobile exhaust are harmful to environment and health. However, the fact that these corrosive gases greatly reduce the performance and regenerability of the typically employed catalysts/sorbent materials makes it very challenging and expensive to remove the acid gases. Fundamental understanding of the mechanism of the deactivation process is important to develop the acid gas resistant materials. Shape-controlled metal oxides (CeO2, ZnO) with well-defined facets provide opportunity to study the surface structure dependent properties and the effects of acid gas interaction with different surfaces. In situ IR/TPD and Raman have been employed to investigate the surface chemistry in a molecular level and relate the surface structure/defects, acid-base property to the acid gas (SO2, NO) interaction behavior. With the incorporation of theoretical DFT calculation, the structure and binding strength of the adsorbed species on well faceted oxides could be revealed. DeNOx, deSOx and acid gas conversion catalysts could be developed with the knowledge of surface structure effects on the acid gas interaction.
